Mini Bag
I finished my little hexagon bag from the video Picking Up The Pieces . In the video Pati Shambaugh tells you this little bag takes about 2 hours to make....I don't believe her. I didn't keep track of how long it too me but it seemed like it was 2 hours figuring out how to put it all together. Having said that, it is a really cute bag, I don't know just yet what I'll use it for. The bag is about 3 1/2" x 2" closed, I used the 3/4" hexagons to make this bag. As you can see I'm not a hand quilter (really big stitches). I'm like Darlene, just can get used to using a thimble, it aways feels awkward on my finger. I don't know why but when I have a thimble on I end up trying to use one of my other fingers to push on the needle and that defeats the purpose of using a thimble. I've heard people say that it's best to wear it around the house and then you get comfortable with the thimble. Maybe I should try that sometime. But for now hand quilting is not my thing so I will only do it in small (very small) projects.
It sure takes practice to use a thimble but since I got use to it I can't quilt without one
ReplyDeletelovely hexagon bag though!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie, I'm still fence sitting on the handquilting "thing". I think your, as you put it large stitches adds to it's cutness.
ReplyDeleteYou did a wonderful job on the little bag. The big stitches look very appropriate with the fabrics you selected. It has a primitive look.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute bag, this would defiantly take me more than two hours
ReplyDeleteYou made it!!!! I'm so glad you did - it's adorable. I agree with Belvie, it's very primitive looking!
ReplyDeleteOh, you understand exactly how I feel about a thimble! ICK! I have a strong desire to hand quilt but that thimble thing may be my undoing. I do the same you do - I want to use every other finger to push my needle rather than the finger with the thimble on it. What's up with that??? LOL
That's such a cute thing. I'm off to check out that video.
ReplyDeleteThe 'wear a thimble around the house' thing really does work! I spent a long time also trying to use whatever finger the thimble wasn't on, but finally got it together after finding one of the 'open' ones to accomodate my fingernails and wearing it around the house for a day or two (I got so used to it that I would be surprised that it was there when I needed to use the powder room!)
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I don't actually hand-quilt unless I do want big stitches. Too many projects, too little time!!!
The big stitches are perfect for your project - it's adorable! (Looks like a great place to keep a chapstick and a spare key)
Adorable little bag!!! i hand quilt as much as i can but cant use a thimble!!! i watched this lady at a Craft fair in March and she had several thimbles, all at once!!!.......i use my fingernails but i do end up with needle injuries lol
ReplyDeleteCute little bag. I guess you couldn't use it as a little change purse as all the change would fall out. Even though it is always fun to try new things - especially ones you can finish in a day - LOL.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little bag :)
ReplyDeleteAdorable bag! I went through all my old Fons and Porter magazines and actually found the issue with the pattern for the spinning pinwheel quilt! Now I need to go through my pile of 30's prints and see if I need to buy more. Always room for more!
ReplyDeleteI am definitely going to have to make one of these bags - too cute *s*
ReplyDeleteDon't give up on the thimble, if I can learn to use one . . . anyone can.
You have made a beautiful little hexagon bag.
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Sonnja from the Netherlands
You bag is beautiful and the quilting stitches look very even...counts more than size!
ReplyDeleteI don't use a thimble. Never have, never will. I can't think of any good reason to keep torturing myself into trying. I push the needle with my fingernail and manage not to get holes poked in me.
ReplyDeleteFor this kind of project, I wouldn't work too hard at the tiny stitches. Those are small pieces, and your stitches are proportionate, and even, which is much more important than small.
Check out Tonya's quilting advice at Lazy Gal Quilting. =)
Ah... don't sweat about hand quilting. It's not the size but being consistent. Besides, it's a winter sport! lol You bag is lovely! So cute! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYour little hexagon bag turned out really cute! The snowman stitchery is lovely, too. I didn't use a thimble when I first started hand quilting, but I do now. As with anything, it just takes practice. And I should take my own advice and apply it to machine quilting.
ReplyDeleteI found you via The Four Seasons Swap...... and just loved the little bag. Watched the video and am in the process of making my first....... two hours...... she has to be joking. Thanks a lot for the link. and no I am not your swap partner lol.....
ReplyDeleteI too am making this cute little bag. I found the video through brightcove and was smitten, such a cute bag but I think it will take me longer than 2 hours to make as well. Glad to see I am not the only one.
