Applique Method
I decided to take the plunge (a really big step for me...teehee) and machine appliqué my block (not enough time to do everything by hand). I used the
Invisafil thread in the top and in the bobbin. Most of the appliqué pieces blended fine with using the black thread but the star being so light needed the beige thread. I'm very happy with how this turned out...whew. I think I might do the machine appliqué more often. Hmmm...opens lots of possibilities, need to do more thinking on that.
Here is a close up of the machine appliqué. Don't know if you can see it but, I did a very small zig zag around all my shapes.

ReplyDeleteThat's a great block. I have never used that thread, but have done lots of machine applique, usually with buttonhole stitch, my favorite stitch. This one turned out great!

Looks fantastic..I love the colours. Incidentally I do machine appliqué exactly the same way with a small zigzag. I find it holds it together better than a blind hem stitch. Looking forward to seeing more of your appliqué...looks great.

ReplyDeleteLooks beautiful! Love the block. I need to find a spool of that thread. I haven't seen it around my neck of the woods. I use Mettler embroidery thread. I'm getting quite a collection of colours. A good reference book is Harriet Hargraves Machine Applique. I use the blind hem stitch. Keep well!

ReplyDeleteI know this post is from quite a while ago. I have been playing with applique the past few days and am not crazy with Kim Diehl's method so I thought I would try yours. I may hand applique but if I decide to machine, I have two questions.....Do you remove the paper first or remove it after by removing the fabric behind and 2) do you use a stabilizer under the block? Thanks in advance.....Cathi
