Charm Square Quilt

Here's a little trick using charm squares. Some of you might have seen this before. We all need a refresher now and again...right...LOL. Take 9 charms squares (5") and layout same way you would for a 9-patch. Did you see that designer rotary cutter??? When I saw this on Nicole's blog I was just so taken by what a neat idea Olfa has finally come out with something pretty...I just had to have one. Darlene was so sweet and kind enough to send one to me. I'm very thrilled to have a pretty tool for my cutting table....it's mine mine all mine....lol. Thanks Darlene you are a wonderful friend.
The 9-patch blocks is all sewn. Easy so far right....lol.
Cut the 9-patch block right down the center in both directions. See the new blocks emerging? I think the new blocks are 7". I made a total of 5 9-patches using one charm pack of 45 squares. This gave me 20 of the 7" blocks. Two packages of charms squares made 40 blocks for a lap quilt. It was so fast and easy to make 10 9-patches and then I was ready to cut my blocks.
Option 1: This random layout of twisting and turning the blocks uses 36 of my blocks, makes a square quilt. Lay the blocks in any pleasing order with 6 rows across and 6 rows down.
Option 2: Layout with all blocks placed with the corner square to the left top corner, makes a rectangular shaped quilt. This layout used all 40 blocks. 5 rows across and 8 rows down.
Option 3: Is to place your blocks on point. With this layout I had 1 block left over, I used 39 blocks. There are so many possibilities with this block. Have fun playing around with your layout.

  1. Wow, that's a terrific idea! I need to think about doing this very, very soon. I'm not sure which layout I prefer - I'm so fickle! LOL

I'm glad you're enjoying your cutter!

  2. Great tutorial. I've done the nine-patch thing, but never using 9 different blocks, or from charms. Great effect. The left-over block would be great for a label on the back.

  3. Isn't that a fun way to make up a little top? I did this earlier in the year with a friend who wanted to make a quilt but had real issues with making everything 'matchy/matchy' Armed with 2 charm packs, we made the rule that we had to sew together whatever came up next. When we cut them up, we followed the same rule when putting the top together. I'm not sure she's fully convinced of my method . . . but it was fun trying *s*

  57. Hi,
I found this block on a British Quilter's blog and was so inspired that I spent one whole evening making them from some Kaffe Fassett charm squares I have. I will keep that one but I plan to make more for charity. It's a wonderful block. Thank you for sharing.Further reinforcement of its utility.

  58. Hey,
I found this blog a couple of months ago and decided to apply strip piecing to the idea. Using 2yards of light, 1 yard of medium, 1 yard of medium, and 1/2 yard of dark, I made a traditional nine-patch blocks utilizing strip piecing methods. Cut your strips 5". Place your dark fabric in the center of the 9-patch and the mediums on the outsides and there you have it! Making 18 nine patches yields 72 blocks. Set them 10x7 or 9x8. This is SO fast. It allowed me to make 3 bed-sized quilts for 3 of my children for Christmas...and I started after Thanksgiving.

  70. I love this idea. Following your instructions, I just laid out 6 rows across and 9 down, with the little squares in the upper left corner using Aviary charm packs (3 Sisters). It's beautiful. I'm trying to decide if I should sew it up like that, put sashing and/or borders on it to make it bigger or what.

I'm fairly new at this so I love these cinchy ones. Thank you so much for the idea!rapajp@
