Okay...I need some help...how do I quilt this? I wasn't to keen on machine quilting because if I use red thread it will show on the white and if I use white thread it will stand out to much on the red. So do I hand quilt or not? And if I hand quilt, how should I do the hand quilting. I could do straight lines in red on the 9-patches but then what to do with the basket blocks? How do I quilt the red border? I have so many unanswered questions. Quilting is not my strong area. I've hit a road block and not sure what is the best way to finish this little quilt. Am I over thinking this a little too much? How can I keep it simple and still get it finished. Any suggestions is much appreciated.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Have a great weekend everyone.
hi wendy,
ReplyDeletemy suggestion, if you're wanting to'keep it simple', would be to machine quilt in the ditch. this would enhance your basket blocks also. they'd probably look too busy with any form of quilting in those blocks.
hope this helps....
julie :)
It's the right size for hand quilting. Stitch in the ditch around basket blocks in white, cross hatch the nine patches in red and quilt basket design in red into borders. This quilt is so cute.
ReplyDeleteI'm really into big-stitch quilting (like Sashiko)with #8 Perle thread at the moment - lovely little quilt - I think I would quilt this way a scant 1/4" inside the perimeter of the white blocks and cross-hatch through the red squares with Perle thread. the border - maybe it won't need too much - mybe a 1/4" in from both edges!

Okay Wendy....I just want to tell you how nice your little basket quilt is and then I am out of here. I have a hard enough time deciding how to quilt my own quilts! LOL :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mary on Lake Pulaski about cross hatching each nine-patch square. I'd also stitch in the ditch around each block. Then I would quilt around the baskets just a scant bit outside the floss and on the inside of the handle. As for the border, I'd keep it simple and do a design that looks like a rope or something like that. I'd use white thread. Just my own ideas, it will be beautiful whatever you decide to do!
ReplyDeleteits wonderful Wendy...
ReplyDeleteBut I hope you handquilt it... that would be perfect ... and for the suggestions... sorry...Im to no help at all...I have so hard deciding myself!!! GOOD LUCK!!
I think it is just adorable.
ReplyDeleteYou could always hand quilt in white around the baskets like some have said and then tie the nine patch blocks. I love the combination of hand quilting and tying on a quilt.
If you don't want to hand quilt it,(I'm not much of a hand quilter so I always look for alternatives!) you could machine quilt it with invisible thread.
ReplyDeleteOkay, here is my suggestion. I have not read any other comment so this is free and easy. Coming from a machine quilter like me, my advice on the hand quilting would be... In the body do simple diagonal lines through all the blocks, following the diagonal that the 9 patches make. It is okay to go over the redwork. If your background is a true white, use white thread in the body, if not, use a cream. In the border, use a red to match and do a simple cable design. Voila, you will have a traditional quilt in no time with a traditional design.
ReplyDeleteI always overthink these things. Check out Bunny Tale Blog I saw on a post (March 18) there about cross hatching around redwork. I'm thinking of trying that one day. May an outline stitch around the baskets? Red on the border - crosshatched?
ReplyDeleteI'd keep it very, very simple. I too am not much of a handquilter so I know you what your thinking exactly! Stitch in the ditch and cross hatch the 9-patchs....perhaps carrying that out into the borders....keep it simple. The baskets might be really cute with little embroider flowers (similiar to the ones on the last BOM from Bunny Hill)...sorry don't know name of that stitch..daisy? Anyway, this would secure those layers too and keep it simple. The baskets are so tiny that a large stitch would be a bit much (my opinion). Wendy, I've got a small quilt sitting here that has been basted for hand quilting for over a year!! I'm thinking of taking it apart and just getting it done on the machine. Guess what...word verification was dentle (coincidence to you or what?!)
ReplyDeleteMary's suggestion was my idea to. I like cross hatching over square blocks. The blocks look small and going around just inside the basket block is enough for a wall hanging and the baskets would pop. A simple border pattern would be nice. It is a very cute quilt.
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful little quilt! I like the idea of stitch in the ditch and cross hatching myself.
ReplyDeleteI vote with Sue -- she said exactly what I would have. I think you'll be much happier with hand quilting on that little beauty!
ReplyDeleteNo help from me! I am not good at quilting.
ReplyDeleteAnne posted pictures not long ago of hand-quilted redwork (http://bunnyhill.blogspot.com/2009/03/quilting-bunnies.html) and I thought what she showed was lovely. The quilting (and thread color?) was different for the borders and sashing.
ReplyDeleteYour little quilt is so sweet. I really like it. I've seen so many good ideas in your comments. The hard part is choosing which one.
ReplyDeleteI think I am repeating somebody here, but here goes. if you want to machine I'd do red thread through all the red squares (one X) of the 9 patches. Then ditch quilt in white around the edges of the basket blocks and probably finish up with some sort of small braid on the borders in red.
ReplyDeleteClear monofiliment would work too but I've never gotten it to work for me!
Wendy it is sooo cute! X in red in the 9 patches. Stitche in white just inside the seam line in the basket blocks, and then also around the basket and inside the handle. Use red on the border.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful reddwork you have made. But sorry I am not very good with handquilting, but I guess you will have lots of helpers out there. I agree though this should be handquilted..
ReplyDeleteWendy, it's darling. I agree with Mary's suggestion - it would perfect done as she suggested. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI love red and white together this is wonderfully done! Can't wait to see what you decide to do with the quilting :-)

I vote for hand quilting. Your quilt is so sweet. Nothing better than a red and white quilt in my book. Great job!
