Learning Something

The stitching group that I attend a couple times a month had a demo day on applique. There was 4 applique techniques demonstrated, fusible, starch and freezer paper, back basting and needleturn. I enjoyed each station and learned new tips and techniques from each demo. I usually use the starch and freezer paper method but the down side is that there is so much prepping before stitching begins. This is my first try at "back basting" applique, I'm really enjoying how much less prep there is with this method and no freezer paper.  I've got 2 blocks finished since Thurs and I'm loving it! There are 4 blocks in this little quilt, I should be finished these soon.

Happy Quilting!

I have been using the starch method but like you, I find all the prep too boring. I've seen the back basting method demo'd; think I might ggive it a try, especially after your reco. Thanks for posting.

I am a needleturn girl and use back basting also. With applique it is good to know different techniques. You never know when you might need to pull it out of your bag of tricks. Your blocks look great!

This is a new technique for me. Maybe I would enjoy applique more if I tried it!! I found a great tutorial on Sentimental Stitches. Thanks for talking about it today!

What beautiful fabrics in your applique blocks. The prep work can be daunting, but the stitching part is so relaxing that it is worth it.

Your blocks look great! I just started using backbasting and love it! I am a mostly self taught needle turn person but there are many ways to do things and it is always helpful to know more than one way to do something.

Love your blocks - so cute. I've read about back basting and don't really get how it works - but maybe it's something to really dig into - the prep for applique using the starch method is a lot I agree.

Happy Stitching - Karen

Lovely blocks there! A couple of girls in one of my quilt groups do back basting and it seems to work out beautifully. I haven't tried it yet as I usually do blanket stitch.

These are really great blocks. I could do the pumpkin seed shape well now, but would struggle with the rest I think. Thanks for linking up to Slow Sunday Stitching!

I love applique and didn't realise "back basting" was so much less prep. I will certainly give it a try so thank you for the post and your lovely blog. I have added you to my sidebar of my blog too so I can try and keep up with all you write.

I usually do needle turn but it would be nice to learn some other methods also. The blocks are beautiful.

This is a cute pattern, is it from a book? I love your fabric choices. With applique, it's great to have a variety of methods, not every one works for all situations.
